Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar Center, with support from HIVOS under the WeLead project, hosted a 5-day workshop on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Sign Language Glossary Design. The training took place at the GPI conference hall from July 22nd to 26th, 2024.

 

The goal of the training was to develop the content for a sign language glossary focused on SRHR and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) prevention and response. Additionally, it aimed to  enhance access to SRHR information and services for individuals living with disabilities, specifically those with hearing and speech impairments.

Participants were drawn from the Justice, health and security sectors as well as the department of special education and the joint national association for persons with disability (JONAPWD) Cross River State chapter. At the end of the workshop, participants shared that they have gained new knowledge and learnt new skills that will enable them fill the huge gap faced in their various sectors regarding communicating with persons with hearing and speech loss. Thus better equipped to carry out their functions in providing services needed by persons with disability especially health services, litigation and security.
