The Girls Power Initiative (GPI) over the weekend organized the 2015 end of the year party and skills, arts and craft exhibition in its headquarters, Calabar Cross River State.

Speaking at the occasion, the Calabar Coordinator of the organization, Mrs. Comfort Ikpi stated that the organization since it started in Calabar over ten years ago has had the empowerment of the girl child through entrepreneurial training, sex education among others as its vision and goal”.

Talking on the activities of GPI she said, “At GPI we train our girls to be aware of the changes that happen in their lives as they are growing, so as to get them prepared for whatever challenge these changes may likely bring and save them from the much false information that is out there.

“We later added the entrepreneurial skills training so as to make our girls self reliant and stay off all social vices that have their roots in lack of money.

“With their training in fish farming, shoe making, fashion design, and others, they are now equipped with a skill that can fetch them money when they need it”, she ended.

Also speaking at the event, the Head of Entrepreneurial Studies at the center Mrs. Margaret Udoh said the organization pays for everything thing the trainees use and the training is at no cost to the girls.

She further encouraged parents and guardians to take the opportunity the center presents by enrolling their children for the next session.

The event featured dancing competition, singing competition, spelling bee, knotting of tie completion and others.

Girl Power Initiative (GPI) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) founded in 1993 by Bene Madunagu and Grace Osakwe to address the challenges facing girls in the Nigerian society and equip them with information, skills and opportunities for action to grow into self actualized women.
