Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Nigeria is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization which runs a 3-year comprehensive training on Adolescent Sexuality Reproductive Health and Right, Leadership and other life management skills for young people between the ages of 10-18 years in Nigeria. Since 1997 GPI sends forth its adolescent girls who have completed the 3-year programme and met all the requirements for certified peer educators through the annual graduation ceremony. The 24th Graduation/Public Education ceremony is to showcase girls who have satisfactorily undergone the 3-year intensive training as well as beneficiaries from our Safe Space in Akpabuyo L.G.A.
GPI organized her 24th graduation ceremony and public education forum on the 21st of August 2021. Graduands were draw from GPI Calabar center girls and the boys/girls in safe space session in Akpabuyo, who had fulfilled the requirements for graduation as Peer Educators on Sexuality Education.
The activity was in commemoration of the 2021 International Youths Day with the theme: “Transforming Food System: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health” and a public education forum were enlightened on the activities of GPI and the International youth Day (IYD) 2021.
Participants for the activity included parents, friends, NGOs, Ministries, Departments/Agencies, Nigerian Immigration Service, Religious leaders, media, GPI Alumnae Association (GAA), GPI staff and graduands. The event featured opening/welcoming remark, spoken word by the graduands, paper presentation, dance by GPI dance group, valedictory speech and presentation of certificates to graduands; as well as presentation of prizes and awards to outstanding graduating girls and goodwill messages were the activities used in spicing up the event.
Outstanding graduands in different categories were given gifts/awards as encouragement for their performances during the programme. This included regularity, regularity, leadership role, high level of information, best social intervention and best all round.
