ABOUT THE SPOTLIGHT INITIATIVE PROJECT:

Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) is implementing the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative Project in 15 communities across Calabar South , Calabar Municipal and Obanliku L.G.A.s in Cross River State, and 10 communities in Abakaliki and Ezza South L.G.A.s in Ebonyi states with support from UNWomen for the year 2020 and beyond. The Spotlight Initiative Project is focused on prevention efforts to address the root causes of VAWG/HP and access to inclusive, timely, and quality services for victims and survivors. The Initiative is so named as it brings focused attention to this issue, moves it into the spotlight and places it at the centre of efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Project Goal: A Nigeria where all women and girls a free form violence and Harmful practices.

Project Objective:  To build literacy/second chance education, livelihood/vocational skills and linkages to finance to identified girls and women, especially survivors of intersecting forms of violence against women and girls/harmful practices (VAWG/HP).

People who would benefit from this project:

The project is designed to have a positive impact on the lives of women and girls in rural and urban settings with a conscious effort directed at targeting young girls and women who suffer intersecting forms of discrimination and violence such as:

• Girls and women with disability
• Young women and women living with HIV, have no visible means of livelihood and have children under their care
• Girls and women who are survivors of GBV of any kind including child, early and forced marriage
• Girls and women who are likely to suffer GBV due to economic conditions
• Girls (18 to 24 years) who dropped out of school due to economic reasons

Expected Deliverables (Intermediate Outputs)

• 4000 women and young women who are survivors or at risk of GBV and other intersecting forms of discrimination have access to second chance education including market relevant vocational skills and literacy training.
• 3000 women and young women survivors and those at risk of GBV are trained in financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills and supported to access business development services.
• At least 6 cooperatives/association are established by the programme beneficiaries in each of the targeted states.
