As part of SCALE project activities implemented by Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar, a Shared Learning Forum was held with Relevant Stakeholders in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
The event was held on November 2nd 2023 in Uyo Akwa Ibom State and on November 8th, 2023 in Calabar, Cross River State. The forum aimed at sharing experiences and best practices on Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Child Early & Forced Marriage (SGBV/CEFM) interventions in the states.
The keynote presentation focused on interventions around SGBV Cases: underlying factors, Challenges and Way Forward.
The discussions highlighted certain challenges in litigation of SGBV cases and also suggested ways it could be improved.
Again, Several resolutions were reached to mention just a few:
– Justice System Reformation: Participants emphasized the need for reformation within the Cross River State justice system. Delays in the dispensation of justice, especially in SGBV cases, should be minimized.
– Protection for Witnesses: Recognizing the potential dangers, it was noted that the absence of protection for witnesses in SGBV cases could deter individuals from reporting such cases. Advocates called for mechanisms to protect witnesses from harm, e.t.c
Participants were drawn from CSOs, MDAs, NGOs, FBOs?community and religious leaders, networks, coalition, media personnel, groups and individuals in each state.
