The UNWOMEN in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs (MOWA) held an Open Day Event for the South South geo-political zone of Nigeria on July 19, 2024, at Metropolitan Hotels, Calabar.
The essence of the open day was to make visible UN WOMEN’S & partners work as well as impacts in the host state and within the South South, advocate and solicit political commitments from the state governments etc.
Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar Centre who was supported by UNWOMEN from 2020 to 2023 participated at the event. A video presentation of the Second chance education and vocational skills training project implemented by GPI with support from UNwomen was presented as well as skills produced by the vocational skills beneficiaries were showcased. These items included clothes, bags, various confectioneries, liquid soap etc
 
 
Highlights of the Event included ;
– An Opening remarks by Country rep to UNWOMEN and ECOWAS
– Presentation of the impacts of UN Women’s investment by partners
– Testimonies by beneficiaries
– Feedback and commitments from Government MDAs, traditional leaders, and networks
– Exhibition and showcasing of items produced by beneficiaries etc.
Attendees included; Reps from UNWOMEN office in Nigeria, Commissioners from the South-South states, Permanent Secretaries and Directors from various MDAs, networks, private sector representatives, traditional and religious leaders, academic institutions, CSOs, Media reps and National Council for Women Societies.
