In partnership with the National Population Commission, National, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and Mediatrix Development Foundation, Girls’ Power Initiative GPI marked World Population Day in Calabar with the theme “Investing in Teenage Girls”.
The day was marked with various activities: Monday 11th July a press conference was held at the office of the wife of the CRS Governor, Moore Road where 13 media houses were present. The session highlighted some challenges faced by teenage girls globally, nationally and specifically in Cross River State; poverty, sexual abuse, lack of education and ignorance.
Wednesday 13th July was used for the round table discussion at GPI conference hall, Atimbo road Calabar. The discussion was moderated by the GPI Calabar center Coordinator Mrs Comfort Ikpeme who made a slide presentation on the theme. Highlights of the day was a debate session from GPI girls on the topic “INCLUSION OF FLHE IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM IS BENEFICIAL TO THE TEENAGE GIRLS”
Representatives from Ministries of Education, Social Welfare, Development partners: GPI (Girls’Power Initiative), National, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Mediatrix Development Foundation, Mother Against Child Abandonment (MACA), National Population commission, community leaders, young people from GPI and MACA and the media made up the list of participants.
