Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI) Calabar Centre, with support from HIVOS under the WeLead project, in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs held a rally to mark the International Day of Persons with Disability and Human Rights Day and as well as to culminate the 2023 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence on Saturday 9th December 2023 with the theme: UNiTE! Invest to end Violence Against Women and Girls.
While flaging-off the rally at the Zoo Garden, Calabar, the Hon. Commissioner, Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs, Hon. Edema Irom called on everyone to join in the campaign to end Violence against women and girls.
The rally which had in attendance other Gender-based violence prevention and response partners, organizations working on issues of Human Rights as well as Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, persons with disabilities, media organizations etc, started from the Zoo Garden and terminated at the millennium park where Her Excellency the wife of the governor of Cross River State addressed the people.
In her remarks at the millennium park,Her Excellency, Rev Eyoawan Otu assured the women that the government will be an inclusive government as his Excellency Governor Prince Edet Otu has promised to establish a commission for persons with Disabilities which will involve more women playing relevant roles.
She also revealed the intentions of the Government to establish SGBV response centres across the state to curb gender based violence against women and girls.
